Birdwatching

The bird migration over the Falsterbo Peninsula in the southwesternmost part of Skåne is internationally recognized as the most important in northern Europe. We’re especially excited that the birds pass right above Strandvillan, so from here you can enjoy “yard birdwatching.”

On warm autumn days, the skies above Skanör’s heath are filled with soaring birds of prey. Each year, no fewer than 500 million migratory birds from all over Scandinavia pass through here on their way to Africa. Every autumn, thousands of birdwatchers visit the area around Falsterbo Lighthouse to witness this spectacular migration. So far, 360 species have been recorded! For all the details on the species passing through, visit the Falsterbo Bird Observatory.

Right below Strandvillan, along the Falsterbo Canal, migratory birds often pass on their journey south. From here, incredible numbers of birds have been spotted from the property, terrace, and even the parking area. Enthusiasts have intensely tracked the numbers of migrating honey buzzards and shared tips on the best spots to see rare species. Staying at Strandvillan lets you relax with binoculars right outside your door. Weather and wind largely determine where the best birdwatching opportunities occur, but when conditions are perfect, up to 500 people sometimes line the street leading to Strandvillan—just watching them is fascinating in itself!
